I'm thinking about getting a Russian tortoise , and I'm wondering how much space I need if I keep the Russian tortoise outside, and if I can keep a Russian tortoise outside in a suburbs of Maryland.

You will need at least 4' by 3' space, but as big as possible is best.

The bigger the better. Make sure there is always some shade and sun. Depending on your area, you might need a cover to keep predators out too.

It is possible to hibernate a russian outdoors there, but risky. I'd either hibernate indoors or just not hibernate and have a warm bright large indoor enclosure for winter.

4'x 3' or 6'x2' inside.
Hopefully outdoors you can set up a larger one; 10'x 4' or thereabouts? Make sure it gets sun April to September, and plant some bushes, or create a hide for shade.
