As some of you may recall I've posted several times about Rita, Redfoot, 10 years old having trouble laying eggs in a normal fashion. By normal I mean digging 20+ nests over a few days and rejecting every one of them thus holding onto eggs for way too long. Meanwhile my other females found those sites perfectly fine.

(A side note for the obvious: yes, I am very aware and take seriously that it is my responsibility to provide nesting material, location, etc. that she likes and will use.)

I kept her separated from the boys all summer so she could feel comfortable and maybe gain some confidence. I put her with one male a month ago for 2 days and separated them. Tonight she laid 5 normal eggs and the location she chose is one she had previously rejected.

I'll keep her separated from the males for the remaining winter and reassess in the spring.

Over the years I've learned sometimes you can do everything for a tort but maybe there is a maturing process that needs to be taken into account.

Attached pic is from last summer.
