Today, my 3 year old red foot died. Many tears shed as I bury him next to an angel statue. I have no idea how he died....

I'm sorry to hear about your tortoise. Was she acting differently lately, any signs of illness?

Sorry about your lost. Your gonna have to give us a lot of info in order for us to finger this out. Can we see a picture of the enclosure?

I can't get a picture right now but it is 5 foot by 3 foot, and filled with coconut coir about 5 inches deep. It has 3 water dishes inside and spider plant (organic grown) the temp is 80 degrees on warm end 70-75 on cold and 90 basking. There are many hiding logs and pots. Humidity is a constant 80. He ate all the time and I always made sure it was a variety and safe for them. The only thing I can think of is it was something inside not working....

Wow, so very sorry. Never easy, but not having any reason for it is really tuff.

Any signs of illness? Mucus anywhere to be seen? Was he active? What did his poop look like?

Not trying to sound mean, but they rarely just die. Something had to have happened,

I know this is very hard to hear but would you be willing to get a necropsy done? It might be the only way to know what happened. It may give answers. I understand if you don't want to but it may be something to consider.

I know, that's why I'm trying to figure out what happened. My only possible hypothesis is maybe somehow he had a parasite/bug.

I truly wanted to but there was no way we could have preserved the body...one thing is for sure, I'm going to take all my others to a vet just to make sure that they don't have anything wrong..

Like previously stated, a quick death is unusual. I have a very ill tortoise that has been dying (also unknown cause) for months and is still hanging on.
Is it possible that it could have eaten and been poisoned by something?
Parasites are always around and aren't much of a concern for healthy specimens. Especially if you haven't introduced new tortoises recently.
While I'm sorry for your loss. I'm also concerned for you in regard the the health and safety of your other animals.
A vet visit will likely find some type or types of parasite. Almost any fecal test will find them in almost every tortoise. Don't be alarmed unless the vet determines that it is some very heavy infestation.
(A lot of vets don't seem to be aware of this fact.)
