This has been reported before. It is an interesting article, but if the authors had done their research, is. Deb Moscovitz's dissertation or the Vinke's articles about tortoises in the Gran Chacos, they would have found plenty of evidence of social behavior in this species.

I very much believe that tortoises can learn from one another...I taught Jennifer to come running when I ring the dinner bell by her feeding rock...when I got the other three, several months later, they had no idea what the bell meant, but they quickly figured it out, at least partly by observing Jennifer's response.
