Hello all!

Here is Rocky...a beautiful Red foot tortoise. I got it in may 2021. He live in Quebec City.

The first thing I started doing with him is giving him confidence. I think confidence is really important in human relation and its the same thing for reptiles.

I took 1 hour each day (working day) and 3 hours when not working to "workout" and give him confidence.

The morning start with a bath outside his enclosure. Then I put it out and place box and various item in his way. He have to push to box to pass or climb on thing. He walk and climb for 20min to 1h. I ALWAYS watch him and I helped him when he was younger. They learn really fast !

He started to always come toward me when walking and placing his little nose on my hand/arm. He was starting to show affection. Then I started putting it under coverage on my leg. He really like scratching and cuddling in my hand.

Last thing I do is putting him back in his enclosure bath so and can rehydrate himself and then he eat.

Theres 3 things that I found out:

They dont like change of routine.

He eat a lot less during winter season...even if the temp inside didnt really change (-20C outside). But he is still active.

He only dig a hole to sleep since I got him. Even if I put a log or box to hide inside...he prefer to dig..sometime fully under or sometime with is little head in the air. In the morning when I open the light his head came out fully and he slowly start to get out.

I have 1 question if someone can look at the pictures... it look like he got bigger black shell line between the "scute" than picture I saw of other red foot tortoise. Is it pyramiding? The middle orange is pretty flat and dont look like a pyramide... is there something bad with is shell?

Thanks! Have a great day!

Hello and welcome.
His shell carapace is not as smooth as it could be. But still looks pretty good.
What is the humidity level in his enclosure? What is the temperature?

Welcome. It's good that you can spend so much time with your tortoise. Lucky you!
Yes, we now need to have the details of his setup inside - temperature and humidity in his enclosure, diet too.

26c one side and the other 28c.

At night it drop from 25.5c to 24.6c...than I got a heater going up to 25.5...doing back and fourth all night.

Humidity in the air is between 70 and 80. She dig herself under spagnum moss from new zealand so this is pretty humid most of the day. ( she sleeps a lot)

For food I can really do better. Veg is just romaine lettuce and kale. Fruit is watermelon, papaya and mango. 1 day per week I feed mazuri ( its a drug!!!) and shrimp for proteins. Approx 60% veg 35% fruit and 5% protein.

I found out a store 2 weeks ago that could sell me all those thing but he is closed...im waiting for it to reopen.:

collard greens

Radicchio

Mustard greens

Turnip greens

Zucchini

nopales (cactus)

aloe vera

I tried to search it before but couldnt find it here.

Any other suggestion? Thanks!
