Purple Flowers???

Can anyone tell me what this plant is? Some people who rented our house a few years ago planted them all along the yard's perimeter.

I'm no botany expert but could it be a variation of streptocarpus?

Im pretty sure it's Mexican Petunia but not sure if it's edible.

It's Ruellia or Mexican petunia. Our Russians love that stuff. It blooms frequently and grows quickly here in AZ.
