i'm in southern california and this little weed grows everywhere. anyone know what it is?

the picture of the succulent grows in my front yard, was planted years ago, anyone have a clue what this is as well?

it has tall thin stems coming from it with a little purple flower that opens out when it is day time, at night they close up.


i want to check if the torts can eat this or not. thankyou!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i found out what the succulent is, calandrina grandiflora. going to look it up on tortoisetable right now

I also second this. The last pic looks like hens and chicks. I could be way off base, though.

The first one is common purselane:

Purslane (Common Purslane)
Contains high levels of oxalic acid which binds with calcium and prevents its absorption,


The next one is portulaca:

toxic Principles: Soluble calcium oxalates

The third picture is not calendrina (which is a weed), but a succulent. I'm thinking it might be in the echiveria family - not toxic.

Bad news then on the purslane I guess. My backyard is full of it and Mo loves it. He races out every morning to eat it. I guess I should pull most of it so he eats something else.

thankyou yvonne. yeah i thought i got that wrong because i couldn't find information that matched with the name calendrina. i will definitely not be allowing them to eat the purslane. much thanks to all of you! its great to be able to ask these questions and get answers.

Purselane is ok in small quantities...just not part of the daily diet. Most wild tortoises eat it.
