Hi,

My 1.5 year old Greek tortoise has something funny looking going on. I just got back from visiting family for a week. A friend was watching my tortoise. She said he had a surprisingly large stool like 4 days ago. It was still in the waste bin, and even dried out, it was 10 times bigger than anything she (I think) has ever passed before. Now the is I think tissue protruding from her bum. I am assuming vet now?

Thanks,

Vit

This looks like his penis he hasn’t been able to retract properly(he looks older than 1.5, but could just be the photo) it could be a prolapse of some kind too hard to say looking at this pic, it looks like it’s dried out a bit with substrate on which isn’t good😣sometimes there’s things you can do to help but if it’s been a few days I’d get him/her to the vet asap personally. Let me tag these guys to have a look @Yvonne G @Tom @wellington

I would suggest a warm shallow soak in a high sided container. Then rub some sugar on the area it needs to go back in. If that in doubt search more and also find a reptile vet. I would encourage long warm shallow soaks to ensure hydrated tortoise. Good luck.

I totally agree with the soak...after that, make a poultice using sugar and pack it all over the prolapse. Don't push or anything like that...just pack damp sugar all over it...see how it is after a few minutes...warm sugar will usually shrink the thing, then it either goes in on it's own or you might grease up a finger and softly and slowly see if it might go in easily...I'm concerned that it's damaged from being so dry...plz keep us posted...

I called the university school vet and they had me send pics. They also said its his penis. I have an appt monday morning but they said it may get better on its own. I will try the soak and sugar as well. Here are pics of him in september last year (25 grams) and now sitting next to the same log in the first pic (350 grams).

Thanks guys!

Update for anyone interested. Took him the the University School Vet here and they offered 2 options. Tuck it back in, add two tightening stitches and see, or amputate. I went for plan A. 48 hours later it was back out, so we went with plan B. I know it seems harsh, but he will literally never use it as he will never breed and that's the only thing its used for. Either option was not cheap.

Usually before you choose option B, one plays detective to try to figure out why he's straining (pushing it out), and correct that problem - egg bound, constipated, dehydrated, impaction (stone, debris, food), etc. Have you had him X-ray'd?

He had been eating extremely well lately, very active. As I said in the first post it did appear this was constipation related. They did offer a $600 CT scan, which they admitted was unlikely to show anything relevant. Even the vet admitted she had a Russian tortoise, and that this would have been the path she would have chosen. Happens once, fix it. Happens twice, amputate. I will be monitoring soaks to ensure no constipation and closely monitoring behavior.
