I personally don't like them. I feel the tortoise should be able to get its entire body in the water if it wants to. Actually, I like them defecating in the water because it's easy to clean out and keeps the enclosure cleaner. As for dirt that gets into it - it usually settles to the bottom and isn't an issue. Just my two cents ...

It's good for them to get in the water and soak; it helps to keep them hydrated.

If I were to try it, I'd still have the soaking area and see if they would just drink from the waterer. But torts are just messy (as are chickens) and those things still get dirty...
