We live in La Verne, CA. That's around 20 miles east of LA for those of you not familiar with the area. Our home is situated so that it is just a bit higher than the other homes in the area. Because it is a bit higher, it is a major stopping off area for all kinds of birds and we are apparently also a lizard sanctuary.

On several occasions we have observed a Peregrine falcon in our backyard. Black faced and about the size of a pretty big crow. (It is really awesome looking!) Fastest animal on the planet. 200MPH! They were once endangered and are now considered to be one of the more common raptors. Pretty cool!

The big question is, can it fly off with one of my Russian torts? They are adults and very healthy.

If it's not one thing it's another!

Well....of course it is capable....but is it likely? I would not think so...especially in LaVerne area...there are so many beautiful wooded areas in that general area that I would imagine he has a generous variety of prey than an adult Russian....also I bet your Russian has a hide or two ....this is strictly my opinion....you can likely find more information on their dietary likes if you went online....and you are lucky to have one in your yard...they keep the rodent population down...

Peregrine falcons eat birds, so unless your torts can fly, they're probably OK>

Almost exclusively birds yes but in rare instances they take small land animals. I'd play it safe and chicken wire the top of your enclosure.
