I would not recommend Pancake Tortoises as a starter unless, perhaps, you have experience with other herps. They eat greens & grasses; most do well with a staple of spring mix and various other greens as additions. Hatchling & juveniles should be provided with a humid hide (less humid than forest tortoises). They should be kept on a dry substrate but still require fresh water at all times.
I would say no, they are difficult to keep and should be kept after you have had experience with other torts, I had one many many many years ago,and it died from bad care. I was like 12 an no internet.
If you've done a LOT of research, know a good chunk of natural history/habitat for this species, have planned out everything, and is someone who is willing to go the further steps to provide adaquate husbandry then I would recommend them.
hi simon, my name is lindy. its nice to meet you. have you every had a tortoise before? i have a pair of pancakes, and they are cool. i had a few tortoises as kid. so, having pancakes was alittle easyier for me. if you have never had a tortoise before you should take these guys advise. its lke a big tortoise family here. pancakes are not easy to keep,so maybe keep reading on this web site and i bet you will get all information to make the right choice. good luck!
