Im kinda scared to hibernate my tort he 6-7 years old. Ive always kept him going though the winter but is it normal for him to just sleep for most of the day in winter?

Your tortoise may be sleeping more due to a decrease in ambient light and/or temperatures around it. A tortoises life cycle completely revolves around changes in temperatures and light intensity and duration. These changes control feeding, activity (or lack of it), hibernation, breeding, nearly everything.

Even if you have the light(s) and tempertures within the enclosure at what would be normal activity levels the tortoise can be affected by a light source outside of it's enclosure. Light sources outside of the enclosure should also be at the tortoises normal activity level too. Indoor temperatures in most peoples homes are normally above 65 degrees so this should not be an issue unless the room that your tortoise is kept in is well below the normal comfort range.

If you're only using only one light source within the enclosure you can try adding more light to increase the amount of light. Anything but fluorescent lighting will also add more heat so monitoring temperatures is must. You can actually make it too hot and in some situations even add too much light.
