This has probably been asked and answered, but for my own piece of mind, I would like to address it again. These pictures are of Praetorius and Shunderson’s outdoor enclosure. It is 7x7, underneath the “dog house” I have dug a tunnel that ends in a metal bucket so they can not continue digging (hard to see from the angle of the picture, but it does go down). There are 4 water bowls throughout, mostly under the “shade table”. I mist the torts 2x day, completely soak the enclosure once a day, and soak the torts about every other day. I am in Louisiana, so the heat and heat index is high. I have been leaving them out, but wondered if I should be bringing them in during the hot part of the day. They also stay out all night. They seem healthy and happy, with good appetites, and the larger one comes when he hears the gate.
My questions are: should I be bringing them in during the day, and should I begin constructing an indoor enclosure now for winter? I does not get cold here as compared to other parts of the country/world, but we do get some weeks when the temp does not go above the 40’s. I had been reading about people who leave theirs out with some type of heating element, but for one thing, mine are still small.
Sorry for the length of the post.

What a fantastic space....and yes, I would create an indoor space for them for those times you mentioned that it is cooler during the winter...absolutely....and they are gorgeous torts by the way :D

Hi..we are in Louisiana as well (north of Hammond) and are building our outdoor enclosure right now. We have the same questions as you. What part of the state are you in?

Hello! I am in Baton Rouge. Let me know what you do with your enclosure, I am always looking for new ideas to keep them happy.

We are mostly done for now...10x10 enclosure. Has 70% shade cloth over the majority but because the ends are open there is still good full sun to bask if they choose. It's planted with aloe, smooth agave, pineapple guava, day lily and a dwarf banana. They have a hide plus we keep some of the grass tall for a place to hang out as well as giving them that big stump (which kinda looks like a dinosaur to me) to get under for full shade. They have a couple little mud pits to use too. One loves the tall grass and one loves the mud. Put them in and they hustle in two separate directions to claim their favorite hangouts.
We wet it down with the hose during the hottest part of the day...but will be installing misters this weekend. The temps and humidity have been perfect. ImageUploadedByTortForum1374586955.653784.jpgImageUploadedByTortForum1374586998.877826.jpgImageUploadedByTortForum1374587084.647796.jpg

I don't live in the South, nor do I have Redfoots, but I agree you probably want to bring them in for a few winters, unless you can come up with a heated shed area. Probably easier at this point to bring them in.
