I recently ordered a bag of this off of Amazon to try as a supplement to shake over greens or fruits or veggies to enhance the nutritional content.
My understanding is that Opuntia is loaded with calcium and other vitamins and minerals that can do all of my torts some good, but sadly, my locale is lacking in the opportunities to buy or grow much opuntia with a reasonable expenditure of time/space/money; this seemed easier.
Since the powdered opuntia arrived, I've shaken it over greens a few times, but this morning was my first chance to try it out with the butternut squash I feed my Russians on a weekly basis.
I tossed the thawed out cubes of butternut squash in a teaspoon or so of the opuntia and Chili, my ancient male Russian, was waiting eagerly for me to put it down.
He likes butternut anyway, but seemed particularly hungry for it, driven really, today... it makes me wonder if the smell with opuntia added attracts him more than just the butternut alone.
Anyway, I'm glad to have a natural and organic and one-ingredient supplement to shake over my tortoises' foods.
