I know Tom has already asked you this but can't see an answer, so apologies if I've mssed it, but you mention a CHE but do you have a source of UVB - such as a tube fitting or a mercury vapour bulb (MVB)?
The mvb gives heat light and essential uvb in one bulb.

UVB helps them digest their food and absorb the calcium etc.
Oh sorry I didn't answer that he does have a uva/uvb tube style bulb in his enclosure is the one producing the whitish light.

Looks like you need more heat and you need to move it closer to the tortoise. Your CHE needs to be in the middle of the tank, or you need two CHEs. Also looks like you need a larger basking bulb.

Last, your open top is letting all your heat out. You need to try to close it in. Tinfoil will work if you don't think of anything else.

Cool temperatures with humidity is not good.
The temps were higher than I thought due to a bad thermometer. The top has foil in the rear where the lights are at and the front half has plexiglass.

I've tried a few vets in the Sacramento area who are listed as reptile vets with some bad results. I have had extremely good results with Madison Avenue Veterinary Clinic in Fair Oaks. Although not advertised as reptile, she is quite knowledgeable with tortoises and turtles and has completely recovered one of mine that another advertised reptile specialist diagnosed as untreatable.

Aah! I see it now the tube running across the top of the tank (looks blue to me:rolleyes:).
I use MVBs as they are so easy.

A good formula to remember I learned when I joined is
correct temps + humidity = healthy tort
too cold + humidity = sick tort
Hope he perks up soon.

Did he get outside for sunshine much when it was warm in summer and fall?

What was the source of this tortoise?

We got back him back in September at the reptile invention here in Sacramento. We were only able to get him out in the sun about twice a week when it was warm for about 15-20 min. I did notice when I would sprinkle calcium supplement on his food he would not eat it.

We took him to one in Roseville that had a lot of positive reviews she seemed very knowledgeable she said he might not make it but that's she had a few that seemed far worse and that they have recovered.

Would a MVB be better than a tube one?

I can't answer that Jamie I have never used a tube.
I use mvbs because they give heat, light and uvb in one bulb so its easier for me.
I'm sure a more experienced keeper will be able to advise you about the pros and cons of both.

Unfortunately he passed away last night. Don't know if it was something I did on my part.
