What are suitable low temps at night? How low can they handle?

The book "Naturalistic Keeping and Breeding of Hermann's Tortoises" by Wolfgang Wegehaupt says that when temps fall below 50 degrees "for good" the tortoises dig in to hibernate. I've been using that as my guideline. Right now we have night temps falling into the upper 40s, but it warms up during the day so the torts seem to be fine. One of my females will be out and basking as soon as the sun hits her enclosure, even if the temps have only risen to mid-60s.

Wegehaupt is referring to is when day and night temps fall below 50 degrees. As long as the days reach at least the mid 60's and sunny night times as low as 50 degrees, even colder are fine. All of mine adult and hatchlings alike are outdoors 24/7 a few nights ago it was 48 here and we are now in the 50's most nights this time of year. But the daytimes are in the 70's and low 80's. They are all as active as always each day. Temperate climate Testudo species should have at least a 15-20 degree temperature gradient from day to night for normal activity.

75 degrees at night for Hermann's and other temperate climate Testudo is much too warm!

Thanks everyone. It's been getting into the mid 50's at night, but warns up to the high 70's - mid 80's during the day. I'm glad to know I'm not freezing Leroy.
