I personally think it's best that you do the research rather than asking us to do it. We can recommend different species for you but then I think you need to research their care. BUT...it's hard, IMHO, for us to recommend a specific tort for you. We don't know how you live...for example, do you live in Texas on a ranch with room for a Sulcata? Or do you live in an apartment in the city and need a small tort who will stay small. So I think it's hard for us to guess what kind of tort would be best for you specifically. Do you see what I mean? So you tell us something about you so we can recommend a specific species for you then you can research their care and we will help you with that.:)

What part of the country do you live in? What is the climate like? How much space do you have? Would you house it indoors or out? I think a lot of people will tell you Russian tortoises are an excellent first tortoise. They are on the small side (maybe 6-9 inches), relatively low maintainance compared to other species, extremely adaptable to a wide range of environmental conditions, and exceptionally sociable and interactive. That would probably be my recommendation.

I know hermanns are popular over in the other side of the pond I would start there and see if it can be a fit for you. Lots of breeders there also.
