Thank you. I got a better picture today. I rubbed it with damp cotton wool and it's not coming off.
These second pics are blurry, but that looks like shed skin that has balled up and collected. I'd try to rub it off after a good long warm soak. If it doesn't come off fairly easily, I'd leave it. It will break loose and fall off in time.

the best advice - have the right set up and lighting (if indoors) and if outdoors be sure it is not just escape proof but predator proof - raccoons can open almost anything- so locks are great
