So here is the new close chamber I just finished building for Turbo and Toodles (leopard and beardy) they both seem to like it more than their previous ones and, there are still a few things I need to change like the water bowl and feeding plate but I couldn't find saucers at the PX here in ft Lewis but I'll go to Lowes or Walmart over the weekend

And I transferred the grass from his old tank so it looks crazy now but hopefully will get better if not I'll plant new seeds

Looks and sounds great to me!

I am a fan of the idea of growing food in young tortoises enclosures.

Is there a specific thermostat that anybody recommends, I'm running the uv and basking lights on a 12h timer with a dimmer and my day temperature and humidity are good but I need to control my night temperatures better, right now if I turn on my black light when the basking light goes out it keeps the temperature at around 82 all night which is not terrible but as it gets colder here in Tacoma and we turn our house heater on more it will change. So any suggestions are welcomed.

They also have ceramic heat emitters, CHE, which work better than lights at night.

Turbo really likes eating his grass, and I think I've got the temperature and humidity where I want it now, he seems very happy lately, he walks around all day just munching on grass and looking prehistoric. One thing thou, he doesn't go in his humid hide, he prefers to sleep hidden under the tall grass, is there a way to encourage him to sleep inside his humid hide?

What kind of grass did you plant?

I'm sure sleeping at the base of your plants/in the grass is plenty humid for him. it is a "natural" humid hide, after all.. ;)

I'm sure there's a perfectly good answer to this, but as a novice keeper can I just ask why your tort is 'painted' to look like a jalopy racer?

Oh and a belated Merry Christmas to you all too!

He was painted by the previous owner's 3 yr old.

I wonder if the extra virgin, cold pressed, coconut oil would help that nail polish wear off quicker.

I tried some coconut oil and it didn't help, but it does some good in that it shows exactly how much he has grown since I got him, I'll post some pictures when I get a break here.

Oh I see - thanks Yvonne. Probably reminded him of 'Herbie' or a 'Cars' character. I don't know what animal safe product you could use to remove it, maybe it will flake off eventually.

Try organic lavender nail polish remover, it's on Amazon. it should take that stuff off. And then just rinse off the shell really well.

Well there he goes eating some kale and cactus and a bit of orange pepper. You can see all the growth from where the polish was applied before I got him.
