I picked up two box turtles from a kid on Craigslist this weekend. He showed up with both turtles in a cinnamon toast crunch cereal box. Their shells both have damage, but they are alert, not all that afraid of people, and already are eating. They were sold as "regular box turtles" (that's what he called them), but appear to be three-toed. He thought they were both males, but wasnt sure. When asked about their origin, he simply said he had them for a few years.

Just wanted to see if I needed to do anything special for the shells. They aren't soft, just messed up. Also I feel like the kid was correct and one is definitely male, but I'm not positive on the second one (but inclined to say male).

take a photo of the underside of the vent and the tail with the tail extended. That is how we can tell gender. Yes, i agree they look like 3-toed.

They refused to cooperate and let me take a tail pic yesterday. I figured I'd wait a day or two, let them settle in, and then try again.

IMO there is not a lot you can do for the shells. if you put anyhting on them, the shell won't breathe. time will help them, and proper care.

Thanks for the shell information. That's what I thought and it's great to hear someone else confirm it.

Operation Tail Picture went somewhat successfully. Turtle 1 was somewhat cooperative and Turtle 2 was willing to show the goods.20180326_193200.jpg20180326_193052.jpg
