If you are very good about taking the tortoise out for some sun every day, then the light isn't that important.

I think your first light would be ok to use, however, mount it so that it is horizontal, and not pointing down into the habitat.

So you basically want it pointing straight down not angled. Where you place it is up to you. I have one on each side of my tank because I don't get to take him out much but from the sound of it he gets a lot of sun which is good. I think 12 inches from the bedding is where most people put their florescent lights.

I have a 40 gallon tank which is 18 inches height, i think its perfect because its not too close! I also put it in the middle of the cage and i have a hidding log in the middle so he can go in it if its to bright or chill around the sides of my tank which wont hit him directly!

Please don't use that Reptisun 5.0 coil bulb, that is what blinded my Sulcata yearling...

I use some 100 watts T-rex's and a 160 watt if you can find them anymore. But you are showing a coil bulb, I thought that's what you were using? Have you changed it since you posted that picture?

No, on the flourescent tube-type bulb, you DON'T want it pointing straight down. You've got to figure out a way to have it horizontal. Those bulbs shoot out too much UV through the end of the bulb, so you don't want the end pointing down. You can use an aquarium hood. The fixture in those is horizontal. The coil bulbs that we tell you to get rid of are actually a spiral-looking bulb, not the one in your picture.

Its the MVB that you have to hang straight down, or it shortens the life of the bulb.
