The best deal I'm finding is zoomed reptibark. It's small or fine fir chips. Same as orchid bark.

24QT bag for $22. Im buying. Few cases so my Lps is selling me them for 18.50 each.

Llreptile com- 2 cubic feet $16 + 18 for shipping.

Most experienced tortoise keepers do not consider ZooMed Repti-Bark (fir bark) to be a good substrate for tortoises, because it does not hold moisture well. Maybe there are other types of reptiles it's good for, I don't know, but it's widely thought to be bad for box turtles and tortoises, simply because it doesn't create a humid microclimate.

Incidentally, this is why I don't use orchid bark, because it is made from fir and even looks like Repti-Bark, at least when the chips are large enough. I gather people do like smaller-grade orchid bark - maybe that can hold moisture better, I don't know. But I just don't use fir anymore.

I went to Home Desperate today and didn't see any Cypress mulch there either. I haven't tried Lowe's yet or any of the fancier garden centers.

I am guessing it's a bit early in the season for them to be stocking it yet in CO. Stores here are just starting to get their pallets of garden center materials in.

I ended up getting 5 bags of 24 Qts Zoomed Reptobark for $18 each that week. Last weekend my GF picked up 5- 2cuft bags of orchid bark from LLL while visiting in Escondido for $15 each. Perfect sized bits.

This thread just made my evening! I am thrilled to read that some retail locations are seeking more responsible alternatives to Cypress. I personally use plain dirt and grass so can't be of much help with choosing a new substrate but it sounds like you have already gotten some solid suggestions.
