When Darwin was 4-5", I was thinking he was gonna be a male, but now that he's past 6" I'm not so sure. Thoughts?

Slight concavity to plastron, just a hint of the "peanut" waist
I thought male, previous rescuer thought male. But this vent shape makes me think female.

The easy way to tell from tails is sheer size. Females have stubby little tails. Men have long ones that wrap around near their leg.

I've got to agree with you on that one. Also have you ever heard of Venezuelans and Brazilian red foots breeding? Thanks, Ben

First one seems to be a male and the one in the second photo looks to be a female. ;)

My male RF Tyrone had peanut waist with small tail ...then BAM almost over night the concave started getting more noticeable and his tail seemed longer and then IT happened.... He flashed his glory! .....as a matter of fact ... He flashes all the time when he isn't loving his rock or. Food dish or cuttle bone or pile of dirt or ... Well you get the idea.

Give it another 6 months or so and take another picture

Here are some shots of mine. Do you think she's female?

I would say YES female! As big as she is with no signs of concave plastron.

What is most disturbing is the sounds he makes .... I have seen the videos on YouTube with this high pitch moaning ... Not Tyrone ...it is a deep clucking like a cross between a chicken in distress and a grunt of a pig. And it is LOUD! We were in bed, and his vivarium is at the foot of the stairs in the hall ...well we could hear him going at it!

This is how the conversation went..

Me; hey ..hey...wake up! You're snoring again!
Hubby sleepily: what? What? I have the CPAP machine on ..what!
Me: there you go again! You are snoring!
Hubby: I am wide awake! ...shhhhh what the ...? What is that noise?
Me: you! ...wait what is that? OMG! I hope that isn't your son downstairs with his girlfriend...this is all your fault!
Hubby: what?! Why is it my son and not OUR ....OMG WHAT IS THAT NOISE?
Me: go on! Go down there and tell him what for!
Hubby: sounds like something is dying! OMG, shhhhh
Me: don't shhhh me! Go find out what it is!
Hubby: shhhh maybe it will go away!
Me: WHAT?!!!! Oh maybe someone broke in and got hurt! Go see .goooo go
Hubby: I am NOT going to give first aid to a Burgler!
Me: maybe I should call 911?
Hubby: what! What are you gonna say? Somebody is groaning in our living room?!
Me: for crying out loud go see what it is!
Hubby: damn it, I am going ...
Me: OMG! TYRONE! what if he flipped over ..! OMG TYRONE MOMMYS COMING!

I proceed to run hubby over trying to get out of bed and down the stairs....only to find Tyrone humping his food dish!
Hubby follows ...sees what is happening ....and looks at me... And cracks up!

Hubby: hello officer? Yes I would like to report a tortoise fornicating with his food dish HA HAAA AHHHAAAA
Me: Oh SHUT UP! ...Tyrone you are disgusting!

And I went back to bed ...left hubby cracking up watching Tyrone.

True story! This really happened!

That's really funny! If they don't have a female when they come into their hormones, they must have good imaginations. Ironically I had a rescue Russian male that liked the outside of his log hide a little too much.
