Mud is good for the skin I hear... Some people pay large sums of money for mud treatments at spas

I wouldn't keep them in mud long-term. Like a lot of other tortoise species, Russians come from well-drained, sandy soils that look like this:

They love to get dirty, but I don't think they like to get muddy, exactly.
