Hello and welcome

First tip is to read this

Beginner Mistakes
http://www.tortoiseforum.org/threads/beginner-mistakes.45180/

Next tip is that an old hamster cage is far too small (minimum 8'x4' for a tortoise) and doesn't hold the humidity or the lamps.

Where abouts do you live? What's the climate like? It affects the choice of species

Well i live in uk northen ireland
coming up to winter
I've handled animals before even a turtle but never a tortoise because they seem so rare here
I would also like help picking a species as i need one that would be not noisy at night and small

Read the beginner mistakes thread.

Testudo (Greeks, Russians and Hermann's) are good in your climate and don't grow too big. I'm in Kent, so I have a fair idea of your climate :) If you go to the species specific forums, you can find care guides for each.

However, don't kid yourself about the amount of space they need though. Even these - the smallest species -need lots of space; a minimum of 4'x8' (1.5x2.2 metres)

You will have this pet for the next 60+ years (we've had ours for 46 already) So do lots of research and don't buy anything without checking with us first. We'll help you avoid expensive mistakes! :)

Hello and Welcome. Tortoises make great pets, but are not cheap. I think you would do better if you read everything you can find on this forum to learn about tortoises before you get one. It seems you don't know much about them but want one. Tortoises don't really make noise at night or really during the day. They aren't like a hamster that will run on a wheel all night long. A hampered cage is also not a suitable tortoise cage. Read the threads link by another member and any other threads you can find to educate yourself on tortoises, their cost and care needs and the amount of room they require.
