When I put my marginated tortoises in their outside run, they go under the shade cover immediately and stay there. Is this to be expected and, if so, what's the point of putting them outside.
Any help will be appreciated.

it's expected i'm not marginated expert but most tortoise seek shade and cover unless it's a sun worshiping species like sulcata or russian and the point is UVB ray's float around in the atmosphere and even if the tortoise is in shade they still absorb some UVB more then they'd take in indoor's

Hi, I'm no expert, and have only had my baby marginated tortoise for around 6 months now. But I think when you put them into a new, unfamiliar environment, they will be very worried about their surroundings and go the where they feel safe (from potential predators and such).

How long have you been putting them outside, and how old are they? I'd guess that younger tortoises might be more prone to hiding until they feel safe. And it could also take them a while to get used to their new surroundings

Thank you. They are about 1 year old and I have put them outside around 10 times
