Hi, can anyone tell me whether male tortoises lay egg? Mine is definitely male, as has been to vet in past with extended male appendage and need a stitch to keep in place. Today he laid one egg??? He is 11 years old.
Not that I have ever heard or read. I'm thinking your vet was wrong, as many of them are and it was her female part that was out, which I have heard on this forum can happen. Are you sure it's from your tort? I mean was it in an outdoor enclosure where it could have come from something else, or indoor enclosure where it could only be from your tort?
Post pics of the under side, tail area with side views too and we can sex it.
Ok. Thanks. I'll try to upload some pics! I put him/her in the bath as I first thought he was struggling to poo! He/she was with 2 female visitors earlier in the year and the same 2 last summer (was quite amorous with them in the summer)!
The tail looks female to me and it looks like an egg. The sex part sticking out, well I never seen a females part, and it does kinda look like a male part, but I'm still thinking female.
You may actually have a hermaphrodite tortoise. A hermaphrodite posses both male and female reproductive organs. It is uncommon in reptiles (at least as far as known). And while not common, there are many known cases in mammals. It's the norm for snails, worms and some other invertebrates as well as some species of fish.
