If its a bright white light yes . I use a che on a thermostat for night heat . They need 12/14 hours of day light then dark at night to keep a healthy day / night cycle .

Unless you live inside a refrigerator, your tortoise does not need night heat, and it should cool down at night. Tortoises need it dark at night.

So don't keep a CHE on at night? My red foots enclosure gets down to 72-74 at night with the CHE on. My house is at about 65ish degrees.

It's stays steady between 81-84 during the day with 104 basking spot.

I have my che on all the time & lights on a timer. I checked temps many times before sticking with this method. It depends I guess what works for your torts needs & enclosure type.

Not for a hermanni or any other temperate species.

Rfs or other tropical tortoises are a totally different story.

I have Redfoot hatchlings, and I keep a heat mat on all night under the soil and bin. It stays nice and warm at night like 85 degrees.

Oh, okay. Didn't even think about the species - thank you for clarifying. :)
