Nice look'n tort

For the flash issue, have you tried backing up as far as you can and them zoom in? Sometimes just a foot or 2 will make a big difference. If you find that the best distance to avoid the flash issue is so far that the tort does not fill the frame like you'd like, you can try cropping the pic. Or, turn off the flash, get a tripod, and use some sort of ambient light or natural sunlight.
