I am now expert but I'm pretty sure there is only 1. Sulcata is sulacata and that's it. A few my look different, but there is only 1.

While there is only one accepted species, I believe there are two distinct localities. One is much more common than the other.

Last November I met the man who runs the African Chelonian Institute. He grew up in Sengal and sulcatas have always been one of his favorites. He has researched them in the wild more than anyone I have ever met. According to him there are at least three different "types" throughout the range. The scientists only recognize one species with no subspecies subdivisions as of yet. Almost all of the ones in captivity are mixes of these different types from the various localities. I affectionately call them "mutts".
