Thanks. I still hand feed her but I'm making her try to eat on her own. I feed her first thing when she had her soak. Then, she's outside until dinner time when i go and set her enclosure with more food and water. Later, when it's time to shut off the lights, i notice she had rummaged through the food and most is gone. So, she"s eating somehow. Anyway, until her back allows her to bend her neck down further, I'll continue to hand feed her. I love doing it anyway. She's so funny when she wants to try some other green. She'll just stare in space or turn her head in the direction of whatever she wants to try and waits until i get it and feed it to her. I've got to video tape her feeding one day...too funny.

Thanks Jacqui. You know how tough it is to get this baby to live a normal life after what she's been through. I've got to get the first pic of her and put it side by side so people can really see the difference.

Wow! What a night and day difference. I went back to your original thread about baby runt and its hard to believe its the same tortoise. Baby runt is luckily to have landed in your hands and I applaud you for all the effort you've put into her care, its really showing!! :)

Thank you srod. I was hoping members would do what you did and check the first post of her pic. Like you said, it's like night and day, and look for any further posts I put out on Baby Runt because she really is a miracle baby.

Baby Runt is officially 4 pounds as of Oct 1, 2013! He had a vet visit to check on his MBD, and the doctor said that Baby Runt has two soft areas: the top of his carapace, and the bottom of his plastron located nearest to his tail. With continued care and good diet, those areas should harden in time. Meanwhile, he eats like a piggy. He's very particular as to what he wants to eat. He doesn't like the regular mazuri anymore. Instead, I had introduced him to a red pellet mazuri from Marion Zoological. He just loves the stuff, and will often bite my finger Och!

He's so cute, though. Because she has the disfigured carapace, the vet said that it's like being a hunchback. It will never go away, but as she grows, I hope it will allow her to eat on her own. I hand feed her twice a day, and I leave greens in her enclosure which she tries to eat, and sometimes gets to it. It's no wonder she was 4 ounces at the age of three when I got her! The poor baby ate whatever she was able to get to, and somehow, she survived.

In celebration of her 4 pounds, and when I received her almost a year ago (Oct. 30, 2012), I would like members to help me find an appropriate name for Baby Runt. Really though, I actually liked Baby Runt as a name. But, I think she should get a real name. So, How about it members, what should we call her?

Btw, I have posted recent pics of her eating red mazuri, and when I held her in the palm of my hand, and in the garden which I will submit in the yearly calendar contest.

RE: IT'S A CELEBRATION!!!!...HE'S 4 LBS TODAY!!!!!

EVERYONE, BABY RUNT IS 4 POUNDS TODAY:):):):):). It's been a thrill to see this once 3 year old sulcata weighing in at 4 ounces 11 months ago grow into this beautiful , healthy, and thriving 4 year old sully weighing in at 4 pounds today!!!!!!!! I had referred to Baby Runt as a he, but now I see that he is more likely a she! Her tail is tiny and her plastron is rounded. So, in celebration of her 4 pounds and 4 years of life, I'd like members to submit a new name for Baby Runt since she's not a runt for long.

She had a full examination by an exotic specialist who evaluated her metabolic bone disease. The vet said she should grow into a good size sully if conditions continue as they are. Her blood work came out all normal, and she has no parasites. The MBD has affected her backbone, and it's equivalent to being a hunchback for the rest of her life. Her top and end scutes along her backbone are the most affected; however, she's grown enough to stretch her neck out to the point where she can almost eat her food without assistance.

Her plastron is soft near the tail area, but that will harden in time with proper husbandry. For the meantime, she's still being hand fed twice daily. Frankly, I'm loving it! So, let's see some new names for Baby Runt! Congratulations my darling:)

Btw, I have also posted pics of her on the scale, in the palm of my hand, eating red mazuri, and in the garden which I intend to submit in the yearly calendar contest.
