I read this thread when looking for lighting options.

I am planning on ordering these lightbulbs. I am planning on getting four of them (there were only two fixtures that held two bulbs each at the hardware store). Do you guys think that will be enough? Or should I check for more later? I am planning on getting a Hermann's tortoise.

You can use those lighting strips just fine. If you are super serious about UVB, Arcadia makes great tubes. Worth looking into. Just be sure you don't mount them too close to your enclosure to prevent blindness. I use a t5 in one enclosure and a t12 in my other two and have no issues.

This is good as a full spectrum bulb, which will help the tortoise see better. I do not believe it emits UVB.

If it is a UVB they will be fine. You don't really need four, unless you have a gigantic enclosure, or four separate enclosures, or if you are getting your spare ones now. If they dont have uv,you will have to still get that. They will need to be replaced in about 6 months. The best for UVB is the mvb (mercury vapor bulb) gives out the most and doesn't have to be replaced for about a year. Will give heat, light and uv. More expensive though.

Thanks for the input, everyone! Does anyone have any recommendations of MVBs? I've heard good things about the Zoo Med bulbs, but also a few bad things.

EDIT: I am looking at the Arcadia website, and it doesn't look like there is an easy way to order their products online.

This site is a good source for Arcadia lamps in the US.

Yeah, that is an interesting thread and link, but I also don't know if the fluorescent tube lights you had the link to are as up to date (UVB) as reptile tube lights. They might be, but it's just hard to say! If your torts get a lot of sun over the summer, it may not be as important, all you really need is light and heat over the winter. But if you rely on your inside enclosure and need UVB, then you might want to look further.

Arcadia bulbs are fantastic; but also some lengths on that site are sold out. They may have the lengths you need, though.

also a good source for lighting, including Reptisun fluorescent tube lights, although some are out of stock as they had a sale.

Also, they have hoods, and a simple fixture:

Check out Pet Mountain too, they have free shipping if you buy a certain amount.

Those will light up your enclosure just fine, but you still need a heat source, and a UV source, if your tortoise is to be indoors most of the time.

A Powersun mercury vapor bulb over one end of your enclosure, set on a 12 hour timer and height adjusted to get the temps right, is the best and easiest option in my opinion.
