How big are those turtles? They look huge. Enjoy your nice February. With the crazy weather this country has been having, you never know when it will change.

Mark, I am quite envious of your backyard.

How do you filter that big pond? Or do you even filter something that big?

I'm all for an early spring. I've kicked all my spring planting into high gear. I've been getting one large planter bed prepped and ready each day all week.

The largest there is a Suwanee Cooter I raised from hatchling in 1984. She's about 18" and 20 lbs.

Yes, quite a filter system. I am obsessed with real clear water with those windows. I make my own custom system to be sure it does the job. I am circulating just over 100 gals/min through the filter and then trhough 3 UV clarifiers, then up over the waterfall. I use a circulating pump designed to run 24/7 and last for 30 years but is only 1/4 HP. High Volume but low head - So it only consumes 400 watts. Costs me about $30 per month to run the pump, but that's actually fantastic moving that much water 24/7 Maybe I should do a thread sometime on building an extremely efficient pond filter system.

Like you, Tom -- I really don't like winter. We like to live in our backyard!
I would live in your yard too. Wish I had that talent to build something like that. I think you should do the thread you mentioned. More pics of your yard and pond too is always nice.

I NEED to see photos of that turtle! That's a BIG Pseudemys!
I'll try to grab her today and see if I can get an actual measurement and picture for you. Haven't done that in a long time for her, so Don't want it to be another fish story! They do get bigger when we just talk, and don't really measure!

Are those fish Pacu?
Is the waterfall the return water from the filter?
Those are koi you see. Ones that over the years have grown up from spawn in the pond, so not the really desirable, expensive ones! I do have bluegill, high fin shark, and fathead minnow in there too.

Yes, the waterfall is the return from the pump and filter. I always construct gravity flow feed into my filter system = 3 - 4" pipes feed the filter through two bottom drains and two skimmers. A high flow, low head pump draws water from the bottom of the filter and pushes it to the waterfall. 100 gal/min.

Very well thought out and executed.

I actually overdo the glass. It is 3/4" tempered plate glass. There are 6 panes of glass in this pond. Each piece is 26" x 72". Calcs turn out that I could use 1/2" but I err on the side of over design since I have grandkids banging on the windows at times!!

Hey Mark,

Very nice setup. Did you use a liner for the pond or cement?

Cement pond. Can't get a liner to seal with the windows. Plus like the total free form flexibility of working with a concrete shell

Fantastic pond/aquarium hybrid!
I think I speak for many of us when thinking, "Now what would I have in there?" Oh the possibilities!
