I'm really stumbling here with my site navigation. Was just trying to create new thread to hopefully get fairly quick simple answer rather then scouring through the masses of info on this topic. My question is this particular bulb. I know the coil type is bad for tortoises eyes. Does this one qualify as such? ImageUploadedByTortoise Forum1437667358.166761.jpg. It's by ZooMed, sold at Petco

Yup. I'd suggest one or a combination of these light sources: fluorescent tube lights (Reptisun 10.0 seems most common), a mercury vapor bulb, or plain good ol' fashion sun (best choice all around).

Our babies have supervised outings but for no more than 1 hr daily due to lack of proper enclosure, their size and need of constant supervision. I worry about predators. Plus the best place where we don't have to worry about them getting lost is our golfcourse when golfer traffic dies down. The grass there is very fine and low, and tooooons of room for them to run around where they are clearly visible at all times. We have one of the plastic kiddie pools but I wouldn't just leave them there and go off to work in my garden bcs it might be our luck that some animal or bird shows up... I may get metal screen or mesh to cover the top of it but until then we just take the babies for "a walk", they seem to love it. Believe it or not, those twin bulbs were already second ones after returning first set up that I bought ( fixture was defective). I knew not to ask pet store staff about diet or care but thought for sure they would know the equipment they sell. I thought my daughter and had done lots of research prior to getting our babies but there are such masses of conflicting info out there that funneling the essentials takes a long time. I had exact same feeling of inadequacy after having done weeks/months of research got into freshwater tanks... I like to do things right, and I don't like that feeling at all. Please feel free to chime in on any of my posts. I'm open to ideas, expert and not-so-expert opinions, observations. I am excited about the prospect of learning from so many
