Importing a tortoise to canada

Hi there, I live in Canada and will be in Nevada for the next few weeks and hope to purchase/adopt a tortoise. I have applied for the permits according to Canada law. I have heard from a rescue that it can be dangerous for a tortoise to fly? Is this true? If so I will cancel my adoption. TIA Tara
