So I have two of those tiny fresh water tortoises and one is really playful but one is turtling and or hiding in its shell, I see it open its eyes slightly and it flinches why I touch it's hands and feet but only a little bit.. Should I be worried?

Is it a tortoise or a turtle ?
If it is still moving it is alive but I would be quite worried.
How long have you had it?
Is it warm enough?
You need to give more information about the species, temps and your set up etc with more pictures, so members will be able to help you better.

No idea, the setup is a small (big enough) for two, the turtle stuck its head out and its room temp but window is open a crack so breeze gets in, 20 degrees somewhat, its a turtle as it can swim and the species, I have no clue. according to information the temp is ok as they are freshwater turtles so they dont need a light to keep em warm, but its able to stick its head out and breath fine, I think its tired and cant be assed to swim or walk around :p

Edit : Just came back to see it in the water in a corner, we got em today so it was surely just tired

If you post a few clear pics of the turtles from different angles members here will be able to ID them properly for you so you can make sure you are providing the correct care. This place is fantastic for advice.
How long has it been inactive? Is it eating OK and which part of the world are you in?
Sorry for all the questions but the more info you can provide the better.

Turtle need to be able to get out of the water and bask under a UVB light. The water also can not be too cold. Hopefully, @Anthony P can help you more then I can. But your info about not having to have a light is wrong.

My friends turtle (same type) is not, and we bought them same place and same species, hers has lived 6 months+ without one and is still alive. It is not a turtle like the medium sized ones, its literally 3/4ths the size of my palm which is the size of a 15 year old girls

There is a turtle section you can read if you scroll down the threads and see what the advice from experienced keepers is on the caresheets you may find.
Pet shops sell animals for profit - the advice they give for care is often wrong.
People here give free advice because they love torts and turtles and only want the best for them.
Someone who is experienced with turtles has been tagged so look out for a reply from him.
I hope your turtle isn't ill. Good luck.

Where are you located? Are yours and your friends in the same kind of set up? Can we see the little box you are keeping them in. They are baby turtles. They need to be able to get out of the water and bask under a UVB light. But, let's see if the person, AnthonyP will respond and confirm what needs to be done. Maybe @tortadise can help too.

Below Is a pic of it and its living space, we will give it a bigger tank and a light when we get to France but I will be adding gravel and rocks for it to rest on instead of a plastic plate bang in the cornerWP_20151024_005.jpg WP_20151024_006.jpg

They need to get completely out of the water to bask under a heat light and dry out and need sunlight or UVB bulb. I thought they looked like a slider too, but I'm not familiar with all the different species of turtles that are out there.

gravel is a bad idea. They eat it and become impacted I would . avoid. baby turtle need heat drafts from a window are bad. your turtle is sick and probably dying and needs help. Your friends Turtles maybe surviving depending on their setup but they're probably not thriving.

Hi Fiona, and welcome to the forum!

It's hard to tell from your pictures, but I'm not sure there's enough water in there. They'll need about 4" at least of water. Then you should position a light over the area where the palm trees are, so when they climb up there to dry off and get warm, they can sit under the light and warm up.

Is your little one still inactive? he might just be scared.

Well, when we move back to France, we will be cleaning the gravel and adding deeper water, we will be using big pieces as gravel so they are unable to eat it and it will have another friend to keep it all snug, the vet said it was ok just as long as it can get warm, my tank will be ordered this Wednesday and will be here Friday, the water will be fresh ofc and what heat bulb do you recommend? They will have rocks to rest on and so the bulb, will be against that

I'm glad you are being open minded and taking on board the advice Fiona, the experienced members here really know what they're talking about.
I'm not sure what you mean about another friend to keep it all snug. They do not snuggle or keep each other warm if that's what you mean, and the more you have the more space you will need because with the right care those babies will grow and need even more space again as they get bigger so you need to allow for that. Have a look at the water turtles section under species specific and see if there is advice about the bulb there until someone who keeps turtles can advise you. Hope you all have a safe trip today.

I would look for a splash proof one that gives off heat and UVB. Otherwise, you will need two lights. One for basking and one that gives off UVB. Do not use the coil type or CFL type. They are known to cause eye problems. Also, you will need a filter to keep the water clean or you will need to clean the tank a lot.

Awesome! We found a UVB that gives off heat, may you explain what a UVB actually is? Also, my turtles sleep in the water and not their island.. Is that bad..? They have easy access to the island but dont use it. In France we will be keeping the box until my new one arrives and will also be giving it big enough gravel so they cannot swallow it, we will filter the water manually until I find a decent filter. I'd like to thankyou all for the advice and are yellow bellied sliders able to live in 4" water? That's what my goal is in my new tank, 4-6" of water.
