I have had Rocky for just over three weeks now and noticed for the first time while he was having a bath tonight that the centre of each of his scutes looks porous.
I have never noticed before but that is not to say he has not always been like that.

So, is this normal or not?

He has no flaking, peeling, cracks, pyramiding etc. He does have a a little bit of clear edges at the rear of his carapace which I understand is just him growing.

Hopefully this pic uploaded from my phone.
I give him a dusting of calcium carbohydrate every day in his food.

You mean the part encircled by the growth rings?

That is completely normal. If you look at pictures of baby tortoises you will see the same, just bigger. The more the tortoise ages/grows the smaller the area becomes. I think I read somewhere that it is the structure of the inside of the eggshell. (?)
