Hello I'am Jeff and I have a russian tortoise named Walter. I'm a first time tortoise owner and might need help along the way. I adopted Walter from a family who could not keep him any more and he is just awesome the encloser he came in was a bit small for a russian so I built him a 4ft x 3ft encloser that he really likes. One question I have is I just have him on organic topsoil as a substrate. Is this ok? And the last one is I live in Illinois so I can't take him outside in the winter is there any ideas on what I could do or make to keep him busy and active in the winter? So any help would be nice and I know how we here love pics so I attached some ImageUploadedByTortForum1371534555.887685.jpgImageUploadedByTortForum1371534598.279632.jpgImageUploadedByTortForum1371534612.413870.jpg

Welcome! He is a cutie! I use a mixture of organic topsoil and sand for my russians. Some people don't use sand because it's bad if they ingest it but if it's mixed in the topsoil it is pretty safe.
