Hello guys,

Little but difficult question:

My little russian sprout likes dandelions and such, but seeing the cold weather and winter that is coming I have a hard time collecting these weeds. I don't want to feed her grocery greens only, and my parents ain't really happy about growing indoor weeds/flowers. I was thinking buying flowers at the florist, but they're usually sprayed with chemicals so that's a no.

Any ideas for this issue or alternatives to feed my tortoise during the cold weedless days?

My grocery store sells dandelion greens and several other good options, so don't rule out store greens just yet. You may have to try a few stores, but I've been pleasantly surprised at how much good tortoise food is sold at the grocer.

If you really can't grow your own weeds at home, you don't have too many options. Pre-made tortoise food, like Mazuri, is a good diet addition if good greens are low, but you'll probably still want fresh stuff. If you have any 'nice' or ethnic grocery options, you should be able to find dandelion, cactus pads, collards, endive, and turnip greens.

You have to buy it, grow it, or find it, and if weather and family make the last two hard, I don't see another option.

Thanks for the fast reply!

I'll be sure to make use of your tips!

Here in the Central Valley of California, the weeds are much more prolific in the winter. I have an over abundance of weeds to feed during the winter. The hot summer sun quickly kills them all off. I supplement with grocery store greens.

Buy Pre alpine testudo food, I think I'll buy some, too. It is a mix of 60 different weeds. But the post cost are crazy if you live in Europe.

Dig some up, pot them, and put them in a sunny window.

Dandelions can be easily grown inside. I've bought the seeds on Amazon before. I grow a lot of food for my tortoise indoors.
