We just acquired our first sully. He is 4 years old. He is active and such a joy to have. We look forward to learning more about his care. Thoughts and or opinions on his looks?

He has a little pyramiding but its no health problem . I think he looks great! Go to the sulcata section and read Tom's information on sulcatas you will be glad you did .

A warm humid hide would help to smooth out the new growth.

Your 4 year old sulcata looks darn good. As Bouaboua said, he still has plenty of growing to do. Give him plenty of sunshine, a varried diet, room to roam, and keep him hydrated. Oh, and ask lots of questions.

He is 12.2 pounds and 12 inches across. Is that average for a 4 year old?

I don't think there is an average. Sizes and weights can vary greatly due to many factors (genetics, husbandry practices, climate/environment, etc...)

Your turtle looks great! You just might want to halt any future pyramiding by following the advice given in this forum.

We are trying. The guy we bought him from told us he never gave him water nor did he soak him. The soakings have begun and he enjoys it.

Your tort looks great, I can't wait until mine gets bigger. Mine is just 4 1/2 months old and weighs 145 grams.

Changed substrate now keeps coming in and out of house

We just changed his substrate from straw to ground bark and he keeps going in and out of his house. It's night time and about 70 degrees outside right now. What do we do?

RE: Changed substrate now keeps coming in and out of house

Most members housing their torts outside will lock them into their hides for night time to protect them from any critters that may bother them. Is this something you can do? It's safer then letting them roam at night.

I have turned off all my night time heat. Maybe that's your tortoise's problem.

Also, if he liked the straw, go ahead and leave it in there. At his size he doesn't need a moist substrate. In fact, I don't have any substrate in my big tortoises' houses.

And like Wellington suggested, block the door so he can't come out.

Your tortoise looks fantastic. The little pyramiding he has happened very early in his life. For at least past two years he has been growing smooth. You don't need to be taking any drastic measures.

I was in your shoes last year when I got mine it was 4 months old and weighed 98 grams. I had him for 16 months now and he is 8.2 lbs. it's been an adventure so fans but we love it. Hint take pictures and write its measurements and you will be amazed at the change. Enjoy!

London my lovely Sulcata tortoise :0))
