Hi everyone

Need some advise.

There a lady who wants to pass on her 4 homes hinge back torts. 2 male and 2 female.
She says they are constantly laying eggs but she's never bothered to incubate them ever.
She's had them 8yrs and they were originally wc as juveniles, she not sure of there age.
So do I take them on or not. How do I care for these, are they hard to look after, are they a rare breed, are they worth breeding, will captive breeding help this species from been wc. The questions are endless.
Can anyone and everyone throw as much knowledge and thoughts at me about this species please.

Thank you Craig.

They can be difficult at first but seeing that they are stablished is a plus. A huge plus. They are becoming increasing endangered by bushmeat and over collection so this species should be kept and bred in captivity.

I agree!
They generally require warn humid tropical conditions, and are omnivorous.

How much would you be paying for them? They aren't particularly common in the UK.

Sounds to me that he would be adopting these.

If you have room I would go for it. Where are you located? Cold climate?

It sounds like a very good opportunity. I would go for it. or if you can't do it long term, get them for now and find a good home for them with somebody who is interested in breeding them. it would be a shame for the established group to be broken up.

Hi there all
She's asking £1000 for the 4. They are in really good condition, this lady has so many torts and different species its unreal. And she knows what she's doing, Down sizing due to ill health.

And even better reason. They came from a good conditions. less worries about their health.

Ok that's ooook... I paid 500€ for my full adult pair but my pair is so old and with very much experience and they haven't got color anymore.
Do you get pictures of them?
Do you have a name of the woman and have the woman something else for sale (tortoises/turtles)?

Hi Kelly.
What is the best way to supply uvb to the homes hingeback as they don't like bright light.
How many different types of hingebacks are there?
I'm having these 4 torts and will be making a tort viv/table/mini forest before I get them. When I've done my environment i'll post pictures to you for you to guide me to anything i've done wrong or can be improved, That's if you don't mind. as you may know I also have some reds, I don't intend in ever mixing them but what is classed as mixed. If I had a dedicated tropical house would i be able to have both species in there but barriers between them so they can't reach or see each other. Basically an environment for reds and a smaller environment within the red environment but closed off separately, and from what i've researched the hingeback wants about 75 to 80deg f which would be the lower end of the reds temp. Hope this makes sense. thanks

Low UV a 2.0 tube would be best but still heavily plant the enclosure. They favor hides and thrive off them. These guys are quite omnivorous so get protein, vitamins and calcium through fungi, snails, and carrion, there's 9 species of hingebacks. 3 are sub tropic and endemic to west Africa like these.

Yes that's a good idea for an enclosure! Later on when I have WLAN I can post pictures of an easy building system for a homeana enclosure. If you want to build a greenhouse in England?? Than make sure that you can hold the temperature and the humidity and never let them outside!!!

So here my own building way. I hope you can follow the steps. To build that is quite easy and it's very cheap too. I paid 55-65€ I think. You can hold the humidity and the temperature very well because of the foil.

Yes the plants that's enough. And the plants grow so they have more cover. What do you want to take for hides?
