This is Chibi, I recently took them in and I’ve been losing my mind over what species of tortoise they are and if theyre male or female. I live in California and I know some types need a permit to own. I would love to have a life long friend.
I apologize for the poor measurements, they don’t really like to be disturbed so I rushed it. Though my phone says they’re shell is 9” in length if that helps.

Looks like a female Texas tortoise - Gopherus berlandieri. They're not native to California, but being a Gopherus species you still need a permit to keep her. You can contact the California Turtle and Tortoise Club to apply for a permit.

The proper way to measure is the bottom shell not over the top.
I was assuming DT seeing they are native to CA. But I have little to no experience with the DT or the Texas Tort.
Btw do you have one or two? You say they.

Noted! and one, I just wasn’t sure if they were male or female so opted for gender neutral term. Would of been too wordy if I kept saying “he or her”

Try “it”. 😀

I too find it very confusing when ppl in general use “they” for a singular “thing”. No matter really…but it gets confusing in situations like this when keeping multiple torts (they) in an enclosure meant for one tortoise is deleterious to the health of both.

Anyhow…not a Sulcata or a California Desert Tort. I’m sure @Yvonne G has it pegged. 👍

Some reason using “it” didn’t even cross my
mind. I shouldn’t apply they/them pronouns to animals huh lol. it is confusing, my apologies.

No problem…. But a big “ no no “ is keeping two, lets say Russians, in the same small enclosure. Then the poster says they like to snuggle into the corner at night. Sooooooooo, is they ONE single tort (all good), or they (two Russian males) that are fighting.

SNUGGLE LOL and noted. Also know the best enclosure size? Google isn’t giving me an exact size. I have to get wood to put around the inside of the fenced pen she has now but I wanna make sure I do everything right.

Most sources of tortoise care info are all wrong. Reddit, YT, FB, vets, pet stores, etc... will all give you the wrong info. I can't get the pics to load right now, but here is the care info for whichever species it is:

For enclosure size, go as big as you can. Try to make it at least 1000 square feet.

Your questions are welcome.
