Please I really need some help, as you all know I have herman tortoise

named crush, and aged around four!

He lives on substrate of aspen, has the right tempreture and lights etc.

For the past 2 days I have seen this in his water
(look at attatched photos)

Now he always does toilet in water, but poo he does around the
enclosure, and I have seen his poo that is fine.. all I can think of is his urates??

All he eats is what you guys call spring mix and add a treat once a week, each day with a pinch of calcium.

I have never seen this befor and have seen it today and yesterday WHAT COULD IT BE? I tried looking for worms etc but I cant see anything.

Any help is appreciated

Thanks xxx

From the photos it would appear to be partially digested food. If that is in fact what the waste is: Tortoises are not extremely efficient in the digestive department even when in the best of health. A tortoise will sometimes pass food that is not completely digested because new food is available. I believe that in captivity this comes from being fed too much too often. Another possible cause can be lack of bacteria in the digestive system. Not all of a tortoises digestion takes place in the stomach as with most mammals. Much of their digestive process actually happens within the small and large intestine. This is also where the majority of beneficial bacteria are. These beneficial bacteria help to further digest nutrients and breakdown foods for waste. If the bacteria population has been reduced in some way, usually by over-medicating, the digestive process is disrupted too.
Basking and/or ambient temperatures that are too low can also cause poor digestion.

Well I must admit, I wake up and turn him up ETC when he wakes he eats befor he basks... could that be a problem?

I do give him alot, but he does eat it all... What is the right amount?
Should I feed him too little rather than too much?

How can I give him more bacteria (if that is what u mean.. he needs more of it?)

I feed him every morning befor I go to school!

Kymiie, I do not think you give a too much food to Crush. I feed Hermy twice a day, the morning before I go to work and when I get home before he goes to bed and his poo is normal. Did you feed him something new, or something hard for the herbivorous stomach like a fruit or something?

Can you post a clear photo of a head on shot? It looks like undigested food(not good) and a small amount of sand(not a worry)

What exactly are you feeding and what are the temperatures it is kept at?
