I'm so grateful to have found this forum! I got my sulcata, Satchel, 7 years ago in Phoenix. I knew what I was in for when I got him. I knew he'd grow fast, he'd grow big, he'd need a special enclosure, possibly food supplements if the yard isn't large enough to graze. But I had never considered the possibility that I'd need to move to a colder area. I'm in central texas now but my husband and I are considering a move to Salt Lake City.
I had assumed cold weather would be out of the questions for a sulcata and just felt sick about the idea of giving him away.
I"m so so grateful to have found this forum! I've read all of the cold weather posts I can find and I feel totally confident that we'll be able to care for satchel in Salt Lake City! THANK YOU!!
I've loved seeing pictures of all the new baby sulcatas in the forum too! I thought it would be fun to post a few pictures of Satchel so that the newer tortoise parents can see what 0-7 years looks like. There's one photo for every year. The first 4 years he lived in a tortoise table in our apartment and we would take him outside for a few hours every day to roam. (Let me tell you, that got old very quickly!). From 2012 to present (after the lego photo) we moved to a house with a backyard. He has a small 3ft x 3ft house that he sleeps in at night. Otherwise, he has free range of the yard, about 40ft x 15 ft. He had a major growth spurt the first summer he was given free range. He eats only the grass in our backyard with occasional greenery treats from us.
