Outside time then in for a nice soak. While he soaked I prepared his/her "dinner." Put him in the inside enclosure in his food bowl and he looked down then TOOK A BITE. I did. I squealed like a 12 year old girl. Then he marched up to his fern, reached up and TOOK A BITE. I almost passed out from excitement. We have only had him two days and I haven't seen him eat (with my own eyes, the kids say the have though but each time I run up he stops.)

I have called friends to tell them this exciting news and they think I need to get out more. So, I am posting here.

HE TOOK A BITE!!

WHOOO HOOOO!!! :D

LOL!! I love your enthusiasm.

Do your little tortoise a big favor and get rid of that food bowl. No one likes to have to go through the obstacle course when they're hungry. The plastic top off a cottage cheese container does a nice job as a food plate...no climbing, just reach in and eat!

Whew - thanks guys. I have given myself a headache, I am so excited...lol. Yvonne, I have a terra cotta saucer I use but was "washing" it so I improvised. I am heading out tomorrow to get a few more so he doesn't have to deal with the obstacle course. :)

Thanks for understanding my excitement!! He is so freakin' adorable. ;)

Ditch the fern too. They are toxic. Don't panic or anything, he's not going to die. You just don't want him eating anymore.

It's a Boston Fern! Everything I read states that it is safe! (?)

The fern looks to be a Boston Fern which is non-toxic but it may have pesticide residue or fertilizer residue that you wouldn't want your little guy to eat.

Also eating on the ground isn't always natural for a tort, you can try a suction cup with a clip on it (like to close up chips) to hold some greens at a more natural height.

The plants in his enclosure were organically grown so I am not worried about pesticides in them, roots were washed well before I replanted them in an organic "nothing added" top soil (with coco coir added to retain moisture.) They are just to give him safe places to lay under with the thought that if he eats them, it is fine.
