Hatchling

For a 4" hatchling, if I were to build an enclosure (6'widex6'longx3'high) with panels on all sides and roof that had 1inchx1inch wire grids, would that limit the proper sun that the aldabra needs? Or should the wire grids be 2"x2"?

I think that the 1 x 1 would be fine...it is more the netting/screen type material that restricts the uv rays...

The 1x1 would be fine, but the larger might be better? So, where is this Aldabra, when do you get it and when do we see a pic? Its coming from Toucan Jungle I bet?

* We use 2x5x8" high for our hatchlings (u/4") with a heavy meshed top for predator protection. What is nice about this style is we drag them around the yard after a few days for fresh grass, weeds, etc.

* It is vital to provide ample shade options at all times.

* We also use a permanent 10x10x20" high pen for yearlings, etc.

* We use a wired mesh that has a small square pattern and that is welded for our tops. Mainly for protection against snakes. I know of one of our customers many years back that did not cover his hatchling and a large indigo snake ate him.

I'm very excited.

Thanks! Good idea to be able to pick it up and move it daily for fresh grass and weeds. I got the 6'x6'x3' enclosure, but will most likely only make it 3'x6'x3'. That way it's easier to move around until it grows a little, then ill convert it to 6'x6'x3'.

* Yes, one of the great values is if ants start to homestead in or near the borders. We move our pens daily sometimes just for fresness.

* Exactly, we actually use 1x2x6" high for our u/30 day old hatchlings!

I'm going to tackle one for now.

This is my thread for my enclosure, they are now 2 years old and live there. They only stay inside my home when in the winter the temperature drops below 65 degrees. Only additions: 2 upper halves of dog kennel/transporters where they like to shelter

I've got one on the way as well, so I've been poring thru the forum and the internet in general for data relevant to the care of a small (for now) Aldab. I've got a 15'x30' area ready to go, but will likely go the route of building a smaller portable wood and steel mesh topped area for the first few months. I'll build something and see how the animal responds-make changes if necessary. Want to minimize stress. Planning on setting aside a lot of time this year for tortoise observation!
