Hatchling Under Water

I use these wood frames with vinyl stapled to the edges as water containers for my tortoises,I just lift one side and dump the old water out, rinse and refill. This morning I found a little box turtle under one. Every time I see one of these little fellas I wonder how any survive to adulthood in the wild.

I have also wondered that. In captivity if one doesn't keep them really well hydrated they shrivel up and die. How do they get past that in the wild?
