There is no gestation period in tortoises :D.

There is the period between mating and egg laying, which is usually 30 days. Incubation for Redfoots is usually 120 days, it can though be under 100 days and up to about 180 days. It all depends on temperature and humidity.

If you are asking: what is the 'term' from your virgin female "breeding-to-laying".. then here ya go. Note the dates in the pics!

I know she was a virgin because I raised her from a hatchling..

Either of 2 of my raised-up females laid these eggs.. not sure which. Very first clutch I ever found!

So count the days and see what you get. { what is that? 87-88 days? }

After the first "nest of the season" it does take about 35-40 days for the following clutches.. which can be as many as 3 to 4 more.. per season!

The incubation does vary but my actual experience with hatching over 200 Redfoot tortoises [ no other species of tortoise ] has shown that an egg can hatch as early as 100 days and then 20 days up to 40 days later the other 6-7 eggs ( out of the same clutch ) will hatch. The average incubation time is 120-125 days.

I've incubated at temps from 82-87F [ different incubators ].. with no real difference in incubation term. The humidity is always the same.

Hope this helps...

Wait so are you saying it can take 88 days for them to hatch or 88 days for them to lay the eggs.

What was your original question?

Read it again tortguy521.. because I don't know how else to say -

The average incubation time is 120-125 days.

So from the time they do the nasty to the time wee little soup on the half shell are waltzing around, yer lookin' at 'round 150-200 days... Give or take. So basically 6 months from fornication to formula.
What I'm still sorta unclear about, is the definition of "season". Is it a time of year? Or just the period of time between horizontal mambo's?
Basically, in simpler terms: How many clutches of eggs will the average female shelled hussy who's 'been around the block', lay in one year, on average?

My question was how long does it take for them to lay the eggs after they have mated. so from the mating to the egg laying not incubation time.

I figured if you knew 120-125 days was incubation time you could figure what the 88 days represented.

O.K. - read this slow enough to understand it..

Virgin breeding to egg laying = 88 days

A season is the time they start laying to finish laying per year.

Each year [ providing male is breeding her a few times a year ] she will lay every 35-40 days.

Neo -- which can be as many as 3 to 4 more.. per season!

And then, to get you really confused: Some females can be bred today and not lay eggs until next year!!

:D

88 days is on the long side from mating to egg laying, but possible. :D The average is more like 30 to 45 days. But to confuse like Yvonne did :p, the average between clutches drops down to 14 to 30 days. :D

I'm now convinced that ya'll are determined to confuse the issue. Did anyone read the "VIRGIN" part? ( which is where the 88 days comes in )

Unless those responding are breeding redfoots that we don't know about.. [ I didn't think Yvonne or Danny bred redfoots ] so they have to be giving examples of other/different species -- personal experience that is!

How do you know that these people have NEVER bred Redfoots????? Your experience could well be different to others ;) That doesn't seem to matter with some people though... Females from any species can decide to hold onto eggs if they so wish or if something isn't quite right :D

Now, throw in the whole sperm retention aspect for the "seasoned" Torts and it gets more interesting.
