Hi everyone.

I wanted to start a thread so I can pick everyone else's brain for future ideas on anything to do with tortoises.
There must be people out there who have had good ideas, some may already exist, some you may have followed through yourself and some may still just be an idea in your head. 2 brains are better than 1, so how good can 31642 brains be.
I've thought of one, I don't know if it already exist or not, if it does I can't find it. I want a small spray bottle cap that has a timer on it, battery powered to make my spray bottle spray, lets say every half hour. It needs to be universal to screw onto any standard spray bottle. I can then hang it upside down above an open enclosure or stand it over a hole on the closed enclosure lid so it acts like a mini fire sprinkler you get in schools etc. This would keep a constant humidity level, the water would be at room temperature and it would act as rain not fog. I hear people spray 2 and 3 times a day to keep humidity up. Your not telling me you've never forgot. It could be used with multiple amounts for larger enclosures.

No matter how daft you think it is, just mention it. I've learnt many good things come from what seem to be at face value a stupid idea.:confused:oh yeh:). Usually someone comes up with an idea and someone else adds to it and so on.
So come on thinking caps on and also give us your existing secrets.:D

Has anyone out there found a cheap method to recirculate water through a natural filter like stones so its constantly clean and naturally filtered.

The answer to your battery powered spray bottle is an electric mister. Mist King is a good one.

Thank you Wellington. Just had a quick look at the mist king, looks good for a large professional job like in a tropical glass house and may come in use with my later project.
For the average house hold it looks a bit elaborate, was thinking something as simple as fill the bottle once a day turn it upside down over enclosure and let it spray for the day.

Thank you again :)

Actually, it can be for situations like that, but it's also for small projects/enclosures too. I have one for my chameleon. Is a water pump on a five gallon bucket on a timer and with a hose that goes to the top of the enclousre and sprays a mist for as long as I want and how often I want. Don't let the big system on the opening page scare you.

The one for $99.99
Looks good that, Just need to find out if it works on UK power supply. What species or chameleon do you have.
Still think there is a market for a small portable mister cap there. lol

Thanks

I have a two year old male veiled chameleon. The water can also be kept warm with an aquarium heater. I do think your spray bottle idea would be very cool and a good idea, but it would have to be filled more often and with the misters like the mist King the idea has pretty much been fulfilled, just on a little and larger scale as you can use any size bucket.

Yes your right it does already exist. :( I'll keep the mist king in mind for bigger projects.

Hi @wellington

I'm just thinking about and designing my new enclosure.
Don't know if you can remember telling me about the mist king. I was just wondering if you know or not whether the pump is a fully submersible pump.
I can't find if it is or not on the website.
Thank you

Craig

No it is not submersible. I have mine sitting on top of a 5 gallon bucket. It has one hose that connects from the pump to the outside of the bucket, towards the bottom and then another hose connects to whatever you are misting.

This sounds great. Maybe I could stop watering the plants so much. That light is really hard on the real plants. I think that will be my next purchase. I have tons of 5 gallon buckets that I have used over the years for growing veggies. Was it easy to set up? Sounds simple.

Ok thank you. Think I can still make it work for me.

i think some one should do a flat pack tortoise table or closed chamber that's actually suitable for them. i think all the commercially available ones (at least the ones i've seen) focus to much on how pretty it looks and not enough on the suitability of the product.

I agree. I was talking to someone the other day about this on this forum. It could be a standard 2x4ft flatpack modular set, so as the tort gets bigger you can buy another set at 2x4ft and fit together to make a 4x4ft and so on.

with plenty height and a way for hanging lights that allows plenty adjustment and a tall enough front lip to allow for a deep substrate.

I'll work on something. The issue is the cost of all the parts in total.

Need to keep it basic and don't get involved with the lights or uvb side of things. This can be done from local sources. Also needs to be able to be lined with something waterproof, which should also be locally sourced.

These are nice gadgets. Designed and put into production by a friend of mine. Can be operated remotely from smart phone, tablet or computer. There lots of gadgets like these that can be set up for night drops, misting, humidity control all done by a program set by the keeper. Has to be a nicely done enclosure though. Open enclosures are very difficult to maintain a solid balance of proper temps, humidity and microclimates.
