Hi! My parents found a little tort out in their yard in NJ. They aren’t sure if they should release it outside or take it in. Can anyone advise on this and identify the species? Thanks! IMG_2140.jpgIMG_2141.jpgIMG_2142.jpgIMG_2143.jpgIMG_2144.jpg

There are very likely strict laws and expensive fines for even handling an indigenous turtle.
If you have gotten the "bug", release the Boxie and do some research on turtles or tortoises available as pets and then join us.

It's a very young eastern box turtle (Terrapene carolina carolina)and they are protected in New Jersey. It is against the law to take them in. Put it back where it was found and just enjoy it from afar.
